My parents began running a boarding house with meals in 1967, at a time when even flush toilets were uncommon.

The bath was shared with the family, so there were many things to be mindful of. In 1980, when a new main house was built, what would become Yukiwari Apartments also took shape — a shared kitchen, bath, and toilet; ten rooms, mainly for students. Over the next 30 years, my father passed away, and my mother, who had managed everything on her own, also passed. Maintaining such a large property on my own proved difficult, and after receiving advice from many people and a formal appraisal from the bank, the property was set to be sold and demolished.

However, in the final moments, I began to question whether it was right to simply erase “Yukiwari” — something my parents had treated not merely as a business but as a meaningful part of their lives.

As is often the case with rural properties, the appraised value was surprisingly low. So I decided to carry out only the most essential renovations and preserve both the apartment building and my parents' home as a share house. Though it may feel retro or old-fashioned in today’s age, I believe, in my own small way, that it can still offer a special and enriching chapter in your life.
